When and where is Wonderwords held?
Wonderwords is held on the 1st Tuesday of every month, except for July and August when we take a break for the summer. The event takes place in the Main Hall of the Central Community Centre on Emlyn Square.

The evening starts at 8:315pm and runs until around 9:45pm with a short break in between. You’re welcome to arrive from 8:00pm but be aware things will be being set up around you (and you might get roped in to help).

Will there be refreshments?
There’s nowhere to buy refreshments at the venues but tea/coffee/hot chocolate and biscuits will be provided. There will be an honesty box for anyone who wishes to make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments but it won’t be compulsory.

I’m a musician. Can I still come along and perform?
Of course you can! Although the emphasis is on wordiness, music can really enhance an evening and reset the audience’s mind while enjoying your creative craft. Please come along!

I’ve not performed in front of people before. Can I still have a slot at Wonderwords?
Yes! Wonderwords should be a place where people can try something new, can perform when they haven’t performed in front of people before or haven’t performed in front of people for a long time. Please come along and ask for a slot.

I don’t want to perform. Can I just come to watch?
The audience is just as important at the performers. It’s really important (and lovely) to have people come along who want to enjoy the creativity being shared. So yes, please come along to watch.

How long do performers get to perform?
That really depends. The emphasis at Wonderwords is to encourage performers to perform without words in front of them. This does take extra rehearsal time and effort so we like to recognise that by giving more time to people performing from memory. We don’t want to discourage those who can’t, for whatever reason, perform from memory, though so we do give plenty of time for performers reading to perform as well.

Performers performing from memory get 10 minutes and performers performing with words in front of them get 5 minutes.

How many performance slots are there?
Again, this depends upon how many people are performing from memory and how many are performing from paper (or high-tech substitute). There will be between 10 and 20 performance slots depending upon who is performing from memory and who is not. All performance slots are on a first come – first served basis.

Is there a break?
Yes, there will be a 10 minute break about halfway through. This is your chance to get a hot drink and biscuits, go off for a comfort break and purchase raffle tickets.

What’s in the raffle?
The raffle will have a couple of prizes and one free entry to a future Wonderwords event.

Why do we have to pay an entry fee?
The entry fee is to primarily pay for the venue which is managed by the Mechanics Institution Trust, a charity. If there is any money left over, it may be used to pay for flyers, refreshment supplies and so on. All the money will be reinvested into the event – I won’t be making any money out of it.

I’ve tried to keep the cost down as much as possible so as not to stop people on lower incomes from coming along.
